“Who are you with?” the kid asked as I knelt over the camcorder trying to get the damn thing to stream.
“I’m with myself. I blog.”
“What do you blog about?”
I had to give that one some thought: “About the privatization of education.”
“You’re against it?”
Stupid motherfucking camera! I replugged the power but still got the orange error light.
“Yes,” I said.
“So you interview people?”
“I film them if they want to speak.” I didn’t want to tell him that I really didn’t know what the hell I was doing, my hands shaking, my 54 year-old eyes too old to see in the dark.
“Okay,” he said vaguely, looking up the hill, down which a thousand plus cops were supposed to come (but never did; they had been hiding in the surrounding buildings all along!)
“Good luck,” I said.
He pulled the scarf up on his mouth. “You too.”
Just then the sky lit up with–what? Flares? No, someone had shot up fireworks into the sky.
I ran into the street looking south on Main.
Huge canopies of stars blooming high above us.
The red encode light lit up. I was online again, my video streaming over the internet to God knows who.
“Look at that!” I was scared. I was happy. I raised the camera, pointed it up. “Look at that!”
